I had a bit of an epiphany last night. It was one of those moments when a few things I’ve never understood about myself suddenly came into very clear focus, and things just made sense. I’m not sure if I want to go into the details, or if anyone would even want to hear them. To me, though, it was something major. It’s not every day you have the answer to “why the hell do I do that?” handed to you in a way that makes perfect sense. It’s potentially life-changing stuff. We’ll see.

It was a big thing to me, and coming on the heels of my Burning Man trip I think my nerves were a bit more exposed today than usual, but in a curiously good way. I’m prone to long periods of numbness, and today I let it drop a little. The end result was that today’s high spots were a bit higher than usual, and the low spots a bit lower. One of the things I realized last night, though, is that those lows are the price of feeling. To reach the highs, I’ve got to be willing to endure the lows.

Over the years, I’ve put a lot of effort into avoiding those lows, and today I feel like I finally know why. A feels like a first step in letting go of that.

I felt really detached this morning, like my body was back in the real world, but my brain was still in a drug-induced haze somewhere out on the playa. There was a sense of unreality about everything, like I was an observer and everything else was shifted just a bit to one side of reality. Strangely, it was a feeling I rather enjoyed.

I wish I had a lot of pictures of my Burning Man exploits to post here, but I don’t. My phone’s battery died shortly after arriving, with the Jeep’s following shortly thereafter. Fortunately, I have friends with cameras, and I’m hoping to appropriate some of their work, which will surely be better than anything I could have done myself.

It may be a good thing that there’s not much photographic evidence. Despite plenty of assurances otherwise, I’m not really convinced I looked good in a makeshift miniskirt so short that my balls fell out of it every time I bent over or sat down.

It was really good to be back. The place is just as strange and overwhelming and freeing as it was 10 years ago, just much, much bigger. It still also feels very much like home to me, even after enough years that I’m old enough to single-handedly skew the median age by a year or two.

I’m sunburned and exhausted, my feet hurt, and the Jeep will probably never be clean again, but I’m also feeling mentally and emotionally recharged, and I’m very thankful for the great people I met out there in the Nevada desert, and for everything those people shared with me over the last week. I suspect it’ll take some time to really feel like a part of the default world again, but that’s OK with me. I think I’d like to keep carrying this little bit of unreality around with me as long as I can.

Had a great time at Burning Man; it’s as amazing as ever. I’m exhausted after the drive home, though, and I’d rather sleep (in a real bed… Yes!) than tell you about it. I will, however, mention that I have just had the best shower of my life. It’s good to be home.

The first time I went to Burning Man, I had neglected to get a haircut before I went. My hair’s pretty thick (though a lot grayer than it was that trip), and in the desert heat I was sweating constantly. When I stumbled on a painted naked woman who was shaving heads, I couldn’t resist. Thus occurred the baldness incident of 1997.

I got it buzzed today to help me resist the temptation of doing it again. And to cut down on the sweat — but mostly just so I’m not bald when I come back.

The Jeep’s packed up, and I’m ready to go. This will probably be my last update here until after I’m playa-bound.

Excuse me while I get all bouncy and shit.

The good news is that the Jeep runs. The bad news is that it’s going to take all week to get off the tree sap all over my arms from taking the cover off it.

I’ve got my checklist about as complete as I want it, though I’ll be making a stop or two on the way out for the few items I haven’t checked off yet, and for anything else that looks like it might be good to have for a week in the middle of the Nevada desert (more beer, for example).

I should be hitting the road sometime between now and about 6:00pm… That little map over in the sidebar is going to be so confused. It’s never seen me go farther than San Mateo.

Canned food doesn’t expire, right?

I’ve been rummaging through ten years of accumulated food, thinking this Burning Man trip may be the perfect opportunity to finally get rid of a lot of it. So far, I’ve found quite a bit of canned soup, a lot of mandarin oranges, and some corn that look like good candidates for playa meals. The only concern I have is that almost none of it has an expiration date later than today, and in some cases the year is a little frightening.

But, hey, you never know until you crack the can open, I suppose.

So, barring any major food-borne illnesses, I think I’ve got that part handled. Now I’m just crossing my fingers that the old Jeep starts up.

Preparations have begun for my trip to Burning Man. I’ve found the old stash of camping equipment, I’ve dusted off the Jeep that I took for my first trip in 1997, and I’ve got back in touch with the Lamplighters, who I camped with in ‘97 and ‘98, and it looks like I’ll be with them again a decade after my last burn.

The Lamplighters’ job, every evening near sunset, is to trek out of center camp with the hundreds of kerosene lanterns that light the streets of Burning Man for the rest of the night, hanging them from tall wooden poles spaced at regular intervals along the roads of Burning Man. It’s difficult work, and particularly hard on the back. It’s amazing how heavy a pole with ten lanterns full of oil can feel after you’ve been lugging it across a dusty playa for a half-mile or so.

I’ve volunteered to bring a few items with me to contribute to the Lamplighter camp. The list includes items like booze to stock the bar, hot dogs for a barbecue Wednesday night, and a block of vegan cheese. That last item may be a challenge. I’ll admit to being a voracious carnivore, and I’m not even sure what makes cheese vegan. I can only assume that means it’s milk-free and tastes absolutely nothing like real cheese. I also have no idea where to get it, or what constitutes a “block.” Somehow, though, I’ll find it. I can promise you, though, that I won’t eat it.

A few months back, when we were practicing for the second annual HP bowling tournament, my team had finished off a few pitchers. Someone got the idea that we should bet on the next game, with the loser taking the winner’s next on-call shift. I felt bad for Ken, since Dave was the other loser and was working for Facebook, and not very likely to care much if Ken’s phone was waking him up in the middle of the night.

It’s become a regular thing since then. The next time we all went bowling together, the bet was USDA Prime steaks for the winners, to be provided by the losers. Though the best Dave and Scott could do was USDA Choice and (oh, the horror!) Select, it was a pretty good dinner nonetheless.

The next time out the stakes were increased, and we were bowling for a steak and lobster dinner. Jimmie, Alan, Ken and Frank outdid themselves that time, and my team ate pretty well after that one.

Of course, since we were bowling again last night, the subject of a bet came up again, twice. The first time was for shrimp, and the second time for clams. Now, once again, I’ve got another seafood dinner to look forward to.

You may notice that my name hasn’t appeared on the losing side in any of those bets. Part of it is that my bowling average has been gradually increasing over time — but, to be completely honest, I still suck. If there’s one factor to which I can attribute the credit for earning me three dinners so far, it’d be Brian’s handicap negotiation skills. I’m relatively sure that, at this point, the two of us are the only ones left undefeated, and I’m giving him all the credit. Well, most of it. It’s not just that Brian’s good at negotiating a handicap; a lot of it is also due to Jimmie’s total inability to recognize a bad deal.

So, thanks, Jimmie. Alan and Frank, too. Rest assured that we do realize you guys don’t completely suck at bowling… It’s just that Brian’s smarter than all of you.

Just made it home from a birthday party for one of the best guys ever to leave PEG (O.K., one of the two ever to leave, unless you count the guy who left against his will, but trust me, Scott’s a good guy).

Great party. The food was good, the beer cooler was full, the hookah was bubbling, there were personalized cupcakes with our Facebook profile pictures on them, and once we got past the giant Bacardi jug the paper shot glasses were full of Patrón. Who could ask for more than that?

As if that wasn’t enough, the Kamen Rider team managed to earn themselves each a can of Spam Lite, with a recipe for Spam Musubi on the back, which I now feel obligated to share with the Internet-at-large, probably because of one too many of those Patrón shots:

Scott’s Spam Musubi

Ingredients
Japanese Rice
5 sheets nori (seaweed)
1 can Spam Lite
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup mirin

Boil soy sauce, sugar and mirin. After it boils, turn off flame.

Cut Spam into 1/4 inch wide slices. Fry in pan. Soak fried Spam in soy sauce mixture.

Take 1/2 sheet of nori and place on plastic wrap. Lay Spam slice perpendicular to nori sheet and put about two ice cream scoops of rice on Spam, then fold nori over rice.

Using plastic wrap, form into familiar rectangle musubi shape and enjoy.

Fire Eagle is Yahoo’s new geolocation service, and until today was available to a handful of developers who had managed to wrangle an invitation.

Fire Eagle is primarily intended to provide a standard way for other applications to store and retrieve data about where you are at any particular time. For example, you may have an application on your cell phone that sends GPS coordinates to Fire Eagle, where they can then be retrieved by another application that can inform you about places in the area that may be of interest to you. Yet another application may check your location against that of your friends, and let you know who’s nearby and what they’re up to.

I allow Fire Eagle to tell WikiNear exactly where I am at any time so that it can tell me about points of interest on the street I’m walking down when I access it from my cell phone’s browser, but I only let the location-based social network/Yelp hybrid Rummble to access the zip code I’m currently traveling through. Each application that access your location data can have different privacy settings, and you can choose to allow one application to know your exact street address, while only allowing another to know what country you’re in.

As an example of the sort of thing that can be done with a common access point for location data, you may have noticed a box that appeared in the upper right of these pages that showed where I was at any particular moment (it’s been temporarily removed due to an incompatibility with the version of WordPress I run here, but I’m sure it’ll be back in some form). At various times I may have Navizon determine where I am using information about the Wi-Fi hotspots nearby, or I may have checked in at the office using the Twitter-like Brightkite. These are two very different applications, but they share the ability to store data about my location in Fire Eagle’s databases. Once one of those applications had stored where I was at Fire Eagle, another applet could access that data and display my current city, state and zip code on my blog.

Fire Eagle’s just getting started, but already there are several interesting applications listed in their gallery that support the platform, and I’m sure many more are on the way.

I’ve been promising myself I’d do it every year since 1998, but something always got in the way. Every year I’ve regretted missing the opportunity.

Today I bought my ticket to Burning Man, and I’m looking forward to it so much it’s almost irrational. The last couple times I went (in 1997 and 1998) really were life-changing experiences. There’s something about watching a small self-contained city rise out of nothing in the emptiness of the desert, then burn itself to ash and disappear at the end of the week, that’s awe-inspiring, humbling, and freeing.

I’m sure things are very different than when I was there 10 years ago; maybe they’re very different. I may feel the same sense of wonder about it all that I did 10 years ago, and I might not, but in either case I have no doubt that it’ll be the most interesting week I’ll spend anywhere all year.

I’ve been a bit reluctant to mention it here, but every few weeks or so I talk to a therapist for an hour. It started off as couple counseling, until about a month ago when Kris decided he didn’t want to go any more, so now it’s a solo deal for me.

I thought I’d hate it, but it’s grown on me to the point that I find myself looking forward to the appointments. I’ve had a lot of crap going on in my life, and having that hour every other Monday gives me a chance to talk about what’s going on in my head. It’s really pretty amazing the kind of clarity I can get when I let myself verbalize the stuff that’s been banging around in my skull for the two weeks before the appointment.

Last night, after I got home, it occurred to me that I often write things here for the same reason. It forces me to get my thought processes in order, at least enough to get my thoughts written down in in a way that someone else might understand them. I also realized that it’s a lot cheaper; the therapist expects a check every visit, but this place just keeps chugging along year after year and hasn’t asked for a dime yet.

I’m not going to give up the bi-weekly visits just yet, but if there’s a chance that keeping this place updated more often might just be beneficial to my mental and emotional welfare, then I suppose it’s worth a shot.

Kris and I had another talk yesterday. Actually, it was several short talks interspersed with a lot of silence.

He’s pretty serious about his move to Palm Springs. At one point, he’d told me his brother is coming in from Paris in October to help him move, and that we need to talk to what to do about the house here in El Sobrante.

I was hoping I’d understood his intentions wrong, but I didn’t. His plan is for us to sell the house, in the currently decimated housing market, so that I can afford to rent him a house there in Palm Springs. Why? Because we live in the middle of nowhere, and he’s lonely.

I tried to gently point out that we’re not in the middle of nowhere, situated as we are 20 minutes outside San Francisco, which last time I checked was a major metropolis. I also mentioned that, in the 10 years I’ve known him, I’ve never once heard him speak to anyone in Palm Springs. Reality, however, doesn’t seem to be a factor in this decision.

Eventually, I had to walk away. I don’t get angry easily, but I’ve been seething since yesterday. I’m not sure what to do about it, so I’ve just kept my mouth shut.

I’m no math whiz, but from where I’m sitting losing a ton of money and my home, and then continuing to pay for a house I’ll probably never see, just isn’t adding up for me. I supported him for a decade: if he wanted anything, he got it, and I never held that against him. What he wants now, though, is just too much.

Now I just need to figure out how to explain that to him in a way that won’t turn things really ugly.

I need to face up to the fact that I’m a dork.

You may recall my admitting I was hooked on Naruto a few months back. Well, Doc, it seems to be getting worse. I’m actually starting to recommend stuff to the guys at work now, and when you’re giving anime tips to Asian guys, you know you’ve got a problem.

Here’s a quick run-down of my three favorites from the last few months. for the benefit of any fellow anime neophytes in my mostly-nonexistent readership:

Naruto

Naruto is the adventures of the title character, a 12-year-old ninja, and his friends, mentors, and neighbors from the village of Konoha. Naruto is hyperactive, loud, not incredibly smart, and has a bad-tempered fox demon locked inside him.

I’m still hooked, though I’m deep in filler territory between Naruto and Naruto: Shippūden, wherein the various 12-year-old ninjas find themselves entangled in a series of sub-par plotlines while waiting for the end of season 9, after which they’ll appear again in Naruto: Shippūden suddenly three years older. There are a few story arcs I almost wish I’d skipped, but I’m at the point where I can see the light at the end of the filler tunnel, and I’m no quitter. I’ll stick it out.

Death Note

I loved Death Note. A lot.

At the beginning of the series, which runs 37 half-hour episodes, Yagami Light is a high school student who stumbles on a notebook. Anyone whose name is written in the book will die, and Light decides to use his new found power to reshape the world as a better, safer place where he will be God.

He soon finds himself opposed by forces which include the Japanese police, the American FBI, and others, including the eccentric “L,” a freelance detective with a brilliant mind, a wicked tennis backhand, and an insatiable sweet tooth.

I was hooked on Death Note from the very beginning, and as I approached the end of the series I actually felt sad that it was going to be over. While the plot runs into occasional tangents, on the whole the story is strong and the characters are fascinating.

FLCL

This 6-episode series focuses on the daily life of Naota Nandaba, a 12-year-old boy growing up in a quiet industrial town where nothing interesting ever happens — that is, until the day Haruhara Haruko runs him over with her Vespa and beats him with her guitar, and robots start sprouting out of his head.

FLCL is, at various times, fast-paced, complicated, touching, philosophical, and absurd, and more often than not it’s most of those at the same time. Despite a plot involving a multilateral intergalactic war, the real story in FLCL is the coming of age of young Naota. Over the course of FLCL’s six episodes you see his view of the world shift, as he leaves behind his childhood perspective and learns to see the world through the eyes of an adult.

I’ll confess there were several times I lost track of what was going on, since FLCL’s dialog can be fast, muli-layered, and liberally sprinkled with Japanese cultural and language references that were a real challenge for me. Still, even with the occasional times where I really wasn’t sure what the hell had just happened, I really enjoyed FLCL and it’s something I think I’ll watch again just to try to pick up things I missed the first time through.

I’ve been back home now for a couple weeks now. Things have been civil, if not warm. It almost feels like we’re living in two different dimensions; we rarely cross paths, and when we do it’s a bit like the other one of us doesn’t exist.

When we have talked, it’s been mainly about how Kris wants to move to Palm Springs. For those of you not familiar with Southern California geography, that’s a little spot in the desert about a couple hours from Los Angeles where rich people go to die, circuit queens go to get fucked up, and lesbians go to play golf, all on a fairly regularly rotating schedule that I’m sure they’ve spent a lot of time working out with each other so they’d never need to meet each other again.

I really don’t like the place, but Kris thinks it’d be good for his jewelry business. He also feels isolated here in the suburbs 20 minutes outside San Francisco, and has decided that moving to a speck of a town in the middle of the desert will fix that problem. I’d chuckle at the irony of it if not for the part of his plan that involves me renting him a house with a pool (he was very specific about the pool) in a place I’d never want to go.

What I really think I need is a pair of balls big enough to tell him to just go and get it over with, but I haven’t been able to. I’m not sure why.
